Kuranui College Gymnasium
Apollo is proud to have delivered a vibrant new recreational facility for the Kuranui community. With the previous gymnasium well past its prime, and no similar amenities nearby, Kuranui College needed a modern space to support its growing roll and serve the wider community.
The new 1,020m² gymnasium features a full-size indoor sports court designed to accommodate six different sports, alongside dedicated teaching spaces. A standout feature is the indoor climbing wall, which students are especially excited to use.
Originally procured through a traditional model, the initial design proved too costly, and the Ministry of Education (MoE) retendered the project as a design and build contract. From day one, Apollo demonstrated the value of true design and build collaboration. With a strong focus on design efficiency and deep expertise in sport and recreation facilities, we were able to deliver the same project for 30% less than the original cost.
The building also includes high-performance Kingspan insulation in the roof and walls for improved thermal comfort, Herculan rubber flooring, and dedicated community storage spaces.
Despite some challenges during the 11-month construction period—including limited local resources, a common issue in smaller regional towns—Apollo kept the project on track by engaging teams from Wellington and Hawke’s Bay. Their efficiency and collaboration were key to meeting the November 2025 completion date.
We’re proud to have delivered our first project for the MoE and look forward to a continued relationship, and the opportunity to add value to schools and communities across Aotearoa.
