The Mataukareao Great King Street project is a landmark project for Apollo and for Central Dunedin. Named by Ōtākou Rūnaka, the site carries deep cultural significance -once a landing place for waka, with Matau (hook) and Kareao (supplejack) growing across the flats below Hanover and Frederick Streets.

This six-storey, 24-metre-high commercial building is Apollo's first multi-storey vertical build and a major milestone for our team. Delivered under a true design and build model, Apollo were able to maintain full control over design, cost and outcomes from start to finish. The result? A $35 million development that targets Green Star 5 standards and sets a new benchmark for commercial construction in the city.

With neighbouring businesses. To overcome space constraints, Apollo secured an adjacent property for our site office and storage, which significantly improved workflow and safety. With no on-site parking for contractors, coordination was key. The team also adapted the structural approach mid concept design, switching from concrete to steel to improve efficiency and cost-effectiveness. Thanks to strong relationships and clear communication, Apollo navigated these challenges collaboratively and effectively.

Mataukareao is one of the first private multi-storey commercial buildings in Dunedin's CBD in recent years. It's a standout project for Apollo, not just for its scale and sustainability, but for the way our team rose to the challenge. From the deep 40-metre piles to an A-grade stairwell and striking architectural features, this build reflects the best of what Apollo do.
