GVI Logistics Cold Store
Overview
Apollo Projects partnered with GVI Logistics Ltd to deliver a modern cold storage facility tailored to their expanding operational needs. Engaged early in the process, our team collaborated closely with GVI to understand their key requirements and develop a solution that would refresh their operations while allowing seamless transition between facilities.
Design & Collaboration
The project began with multiple iterations of the floor plan, shaped by site visits to GVI’s existing Auckland facilities. These visits provided the Apollo team with valuable insight into GVI’s workflows and helped inform a design that balanced innovation with practicality.
A standout feature of this project was the strong client relationship. With a single point of contact throughout, communication was streamlined and effective. Apollo’s project leads maintained daily engagement, enabling GVI to remain closely involved and invested in the project’s success.
Construction Challenges & Solutions
The build involved installing three chillers a freezer and temperature controlled loading zone within an existing warehouse, constructed on a post-tension slab. This presented early design constraints, particularly around access and configuration. A true reflection of our commitment to challenging assumptions and driving better outcomes—the team sourced forklift model data to test layout efficiency, and when live demonstrations revealed limitations, we worked closely with consultants to refine the design solution.
Live Environment Expertise
Operating within a live site required careful planning and coordination. Apollo created a full-height temporary wall to separate construction from GVI’s active operations, ensuring safety and minimal disruption throughout.
Sustainability Initiatives
CO₂ Refrigeration: The natural refrigerant system enables a more sustainable, cost-effective and energy-efficient cooling solution.
Soft Plastics Recycling: Committed to supporting a circular economy, Apollo coordinated with saveBOARD to take soft plastics used on site and recycle them into low carbon building materials.
Outcome
Despite early delays in the design phase and a few long-lead items, the team delivered the project both on time and on budget. We were proud of the cohesive working relationship with our subcontractors who worked hard to help maintain the programme and deliver on time. The client was extremely pleased with the final result, and the strong relationship built throughout the project lays a solid foundation for future collaborations.
