Complex Cold Storage Solution for Trents Wholesale

Apollo Projects has successfully completed a major upgrade of the Trents Wholesale food store in Hornby, strengthening our long-standing partnership with Foodstuffs South Island and establishing a new relationship with fund manager Mainland Capital.

Commissioned under a negotiated design-and-build contract, the project benefited from a flexible delivery model that allowed scope adjustments as requirements evolved. This collaborative approach ensured technical precision, cost efficiency, and the ability to overcome challenges without compromising timelines.

Project Scope and Objectives

The refurbishment included the installation of a 1,000m² freezer within an existing dry store, chiller enhancements, seismic strengthening, and office improvements. These upgrades were designed to support Trents’ chilled storage and distribution needs, future-proofing operations for years to come.

Managing Complexity in a Live Environment

While initially appearing straightforward, the project presented significant technical challenges, including the integration of a CO₂ refrigeration system—an advanced technology in the cold storage sector. The team navigated seismic upgrades, electrical redesigns, and multiple relocations of the mechanical plant—all within an operational warehouse. Careful planning and coordination minimized disruption and maintained safety throughout.

Innovative Solutions Under Budget Constraints

Strict budget parameters required creative problem-solving during design. For example, transformer requirements initially posed a major cost risk, but through collaboration and an independent review, the team implemented a simplified breaker upgrade—achieving compliance and cost savings.

Quality Outcomes and Timely Delivery

The project featured fibre-reinforced concrete slabs, delivering exceptional durability with zero cracking post-completion. Seismic strengthening was executed seamlessly, and the freezer and chiller were handed over ahead of schedule on 25 October 2025—underscoring Apollo’s commitment to reliability and performance.
