New Recreational Hub a Huge Win for Kuranui College and Community

Apollo Projects is excited to announce the completion of a state-of-the-art recreational facility for the Kuranui community. With the old gymnasium long past its best and no comparable amenities nearby, Kuranui College needed a contemporary space to support its growing student roll and provide a resource for the wider community.

The new 1,020m² gymnasium includes a full-size indoor sports court suitable for six different sports, plus dedicated teaching areas. A highlight is the indoor climbing wall—a feature students can’t wait to enjoy.

Initially procured under a traditional model, the original design exceeded budget, prompting the Ministry of Education (MoE) to retender as a design and build contract. Apollo’s collaborative approach and expertise in sport and recreation facilities delivered the same vision for 30% less than the original cost, proving the value of true design-build partnerships.

The facility incorporates high-performance Kingspan insulation for thermal efficiency, Herculan rubber flooring, and community storage spaces. Despite challenges during the 11-month build—such as limited local resources in a regional setting—Apollo kept the project on track by mobilising skilled teams from Wellington and Hawke’s Bay, ensuring completion in November 2025.

We’re proud to have delivered our first project for the MoE and look forward to a continued relationship, and the opportunity to add value to schools and communities across Aotearoa.
